Peveril pip Symonds to take College Superstars title
Just eight points separated the sporting prowess of students from Barton Peveril and their Peter Symonds’ counterparts when the two sixth form colleges competed in the pilot of a new competition for students who show outstanding talent or a natural gift for sport.
The focal point of the competition – which saw teams compete in everything from fitness testing to target skills, rowing to multi-ability events – was a gruelling duathlon comprising a 400m run followed by a 2000m cycle. The girls’ event was won by Nat Simmons (Peter Symonds) while the boys’ event resulted in a tie for first place between Rob O’Meara (Barton Peveril) and Tom Humberstone (Peter Symonds).
The final outcome of the event was decided on the overall score of the top four boys and girls from each college with an extra push for personal best performances allowing Barton Peveril to beat Peter Symonds by a mere eight points.

Double design win for Barton Peveril
Barton Peveril student Oliver Douglass has been named Brunel Young Designer of the Year at the annual Young Designers Competition – the second consecutive year that a student from the Eastleigh sixth form college has won the prestigious award.
Oliver beat more than 1000 entrants from 250 schools and colleges nationwide to reach the finals and receive a £1000 prize for his lockable motorbike paddock stand, a piece of equipment which enables motorbike race competitors to work on their machines in an upright position and secure them when unattended.
The award judges look for innovation, sound thought processes, good design and the product’s potential for commercial development. Bikes are a recurring theme – last year Barton Peveril student Nick Clarke swept the board with his design for incorporating lights in bicycle handlebars.
Barton Peveril product design teacher Dave Horwood commented : “It’s an incredible achievement for our students to reach the finals of this award, let alone walk away with the top prize two years running.
“Oliver’s accolade speaks volumes for the high standard of work produced by students at Barton Peveril and the creativity of young people in general.”
The Young Designers Competition is sponsored by Brunel University.
