Trio bow out after 80 years’ service

Dedication, enthusiasm, fairness and integrity were attributes mentioned time and again when staff at Barton Peveril College bade farewell to three retiring colleagues.

Vice principal Pat Mullins and heads of faculty Kathy Clark and Penny Edwards had clocked up a combined total of 80 years’ service at the Eastleigh sixth form college by the time they said goodbye at the end of the summer term.

Pat was appointed vice principal in 1990, becoming first vice principal in 2002 and acting principal in 2008. Kathy joined Barton Peveril as a maths teacher in 1986, becoming head of department in 1993 and later a curriculum director and head of faculty. Penny’s career at the college spans 36 years, from her time as an English teacher through senior appointments in the drama and English departments to curriculum director and faculty director for the Arts.

Paying tribute to the trio’s energy, loyalty and professionalism, principal Jonathan Prest cited an unswerving commitment to providing young people with the best possible teaching and wider college experience as the common thread running through their careers. “Pat, Kathy and Penny have contributed so much to the success and ethos of Barton Peveril and leave a tremendous legacy,” he said. “They have seen many changes during their time here and made a real difference, not just to Barton Peveril as an institution, but to thousands of individual staff and students along the way. We wish them all a well deserved and very happy retirement.”

Doyle & The Fourfathers wow O2 audience
Local band Doyle & The Fourfathers scooped a major music industry award when they played Birmingham’s O2 arena during the National Festival of Music for Youth (NFMY).
The largest event of its kind in Europe, NFMY showcases rising talent on the UK music scene and the coveted Rockschool Award confirmed the writing and performing talent which Will Doyle and band members Ben Clark, Michael Goozee and Alex Urch honed during their time as students at Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh.
The band’s gap year activity has included airtime on on BBC 6 Music and the release of a debut self-titled mini album.  Next up is a support gig for Mike Joyce from The Smiths at Southampton’s Soul Cellar.
