Musicians turned up the volume with good reason when the college’s choir and jazz ensemble both received invitations to perform at the prestigious National Music for Youth Festival in Birmingham this summer.
The inspirational six day Festival showcases the best young talent from across the UK with participants selected from more than 50,000 performers at regional festivals held earlier in the year.
The 33 singers and 16 jazz musicians are hoping to repeat Barton Peveril’s success in 2009 when the jazz group won the overall Music for Youth award.

Second year Textiles student Amy Carlin will have her work judged by internationally renowned designer Wayne Hemingway MBE after being selected to take part in a project that aims to raise the profile of emerging designers and the work of charitable organisations in Eastleigh.
Now in its second year, the Enliven project brings together artists, designers and local charities to ‘enliven’ Eastleigh town centre during the summer months in a competition primarily for practising fashion and textile designers.
Over the coming weeks Amy will be working with donations from local charity shops to create new, customised designer clothing and accessories. Her work will be exhibited as part of a fashion trail around Eastleigh town centre before being put on the catwalk and sold in aid of Save the Children.

Barton Peveril students bounced, attacked, volleyed, smashed, rallied, and flicked their way to regional and national success at the British Colleges National Championships held at Bath University.
Eleven students qualified to represent the South East region in the three day event which saw more than 2,000 students and staff from colleges across 11 UK regions competing in 14 different sports.
Up and coming national tennis talent Rob Mitchell from Southampton proved himself the best player across all British Colleges, taking gold with top form serves and magnificent prowess on court.
Trampolinist Calum McDonald contributed to the South East team achievement with a silver medal while the Men’s Volleyball team took silver to become the second highest ranking team in the country. The title went to Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

Barton Peveril sportsmen and women are celebrating after a brilliant season ended with proof of their position as the strongest performing college across four sports in the Hampshire College league tables.
Clear by an impressive nine points in the first division netball league, four points in mixed hockey and three in mixed badminton and men’s volleyball, Barton players also finished two points ahead in men’s badminton doubles and singles, and second in the women’s doubles and singles leagues.
Hot on the heels of the first netball team winning the U19 Hampshire Invitational Tournament, the college’s men’s volleyball team took the British Colleges’ Volleyball Cup after winning the national final against East Norfolk College three sets to one

Chlamydia is silent, serious and spreading. Leave it unchecked and you could become infertile.
These were the stark messages delivered by A-level Health and Social Care students who staged a chlamydia awareness campaign as part of their assessed coursework.
NHS Chlamydia Screening Programme nurse, Sarah Coulbeck, trained 14 students to carry out simple diagnostic urine tests as part of a promotion designed to encourage more young people to seek sexual health advice.
Barton Peveril students have access to a range of confidential, free services and are encouraged to take responsibility for their health and participate in screening programmes.
With free cinema tickets, condoms, underwear and peace of mind on offer, almost 400 students took tests during the one day event, highlighting the effectiveness of peer-led education.

When Adrian Hall, principal of the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA), spent a day at Barton Peveril, he knew he would be auditioning some of the best students in the business.
A longstanding relationship means that the Academy takes the unusual step of coming into the sixth form college where drama teacher Gemma Watts runs special preparatory workshops for students applying to ALRA and other prestigious institutions including the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Central School of Speech and Drama.
This year, six of the 11 who auditioned were offered places; an impressive 55% success rate compared to the single figure percentage of offers generally made following leading drama school audition days.
Former ALRA students include Miranda Hart, Holby City actor Jimmy Akingbola and Mistresses star, Sarah Parish.

A Level students at Barton Peveril have the opportunity to work with Parliament’s Education Service and be involved in the production of a live BBC webcast after the college’s Debating Society won the 2011/12 BBC Schools Questions and Answers competition.
The Debating Society chose Censorship of the Arts as the topic for their entry which was filmed by Media students who then edited the college’s submission.
Presenting the BBC award to Barton Peveril’s Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, Carys Fuller, BBC Schools Questions and Answers producer Rob Pearson said that the college’s entry ‘impressed the judges at every stage’.
“I’m delighted that Barton Peveril is one of our six winners this year, not least because every part of the college’s entry was entirely down to the students themselves,” he said.

Barton Peveril’s first team netballers are celebrating after taking the 2011-2012 Hampshire Colleges League championship title in a closely fought match that showcased the best of the South’s young netball talent.
The girls’ 42-34 victory against Itchen College ended a game that started slowly but built to a fighting finish with Itchen’s strong team testing Barton’s fitness and skills to the limit.
Commenting on the match, coach Alix Christopher said that her team was more than ready for the challenge and deserved their success.
“The girls have shown excellent commitment to training and matches throughout the season and really gel as a team,” she said.
“With many of these students in their first year at Barton Peveril this is only the beginning. I’m really excited to see what they can do next season!”

The heat is on for All England Colleges rugby player Elliot White (17) who has earned three caps in a month representing his college and his country in two games against Portugal and a third against the Irish Exiles.
The former Wyvern pupil has been devoted to the sport since the age of seven and currently plays prop for Barton Peveril, Trojans, Hampshire and England Colleges U19 squad.
Barton Peveril rugby coach, Henry Dorling, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for Elliot and everyone at Barton Peveril is very proud.
“To have a college team player achieve at this level and show such consistent commitment to his sport is fantastic.
