Huhne energises audience

More than 40 geography and environmental studies students heard former energy secretary and Eastleigh MP, Chris Huhne, tackle the issues surrounding renewable energy when Barton Peveril hosted the fifth Vitacress Conservation Trust annual lecture.

The students were among an audience of around 130 invited guests who heard Mr Huhne’s views on the vital role of renewables in recovering economies and made insightful contributions to a question and answer session.

The Vitacress Conservation Trust is a charity set up by Europe’s leading grower and packer of ready-to-eat salad leaves. It focuses on environmental initiatives associated with salad and watercress crop production.

Trust chairman, Professor Gail Taylor from Southampton University, said: “I am particularly delighted that so many students were in the audience for this year’s annual lecture.

“There are no easy answers to the renewables…

Silent message

Chlamydia is silent, serious and spreading.  Leave it unchecked and you could become infertile.

These were the stark messages delivered by A-level Health and Social Care students who staged a chlamydia awareness campaign as part of their assessed coursework.

NHS Chlamydia Screening Programme nurse, Sarah Coulbeck, trained 14 students to carry out simple diagnostic urine tests as part of a promotion designed to encourage more young people to seek sexual health advice.

Barton Peveril students have access to a range of confidential, free services and are encouraged to take responsibility for their health and participate in screening programmes.

With free cinema tickets, condoms, underwear and peace of mind on offer, almost 400 students took tests during the one day event, highlighting the effectiveness of peer-led education.

Health and Social Care subject leader Julia Brudenell said:…

Russian visitors

An inspiring morning at Barton Peveril got a friendship visit to Eastleigh by officials from the Russian town of Kimry off to a flying start.

The College was the first port of call on a five day itinerary arranged by Eastleigh  Borough Council, which has a friendship link with the Russian town.

The delegation, hosted by Eastleigh Mayor, Cllr Wayne Irish, and Carole Sayles, chair of the Eastleigh Twinning Association, was greeted in Russian by college principal, Jonathan Prest, who brushed up his linguistic skills with the help of first year student, Roman Dashkovskyy, and mature student, Svitlana Bezruk.

Roman, a native Russian speaker, and Ukranian-born Svitlana both acted as translators for the visit, ensuring guests were well informed throughout their tour and conversations with staff and students.

Impressed by both the range of…

Calorie patrol

Alcohol awareness took on a different guise when  students were challenged to guess the calories in tipples from wine to lager and liqueurs.

Discovering that the number of calories in a bottle of beer (171) is roughly equivalent to those in a slice of pizza came as a surprise to students attending peer-led healthy lifestyle events covering everything from the consequences of losing control as a result of drug and alcohol abuse to personal safety, sexual health and help with quitting smoking.

The majority of promotional events during the college’s Drugs and Alcohol Awareness Week were planned and delivered by Health & Social Care students working towards their final qualifications.

One stop shop

Year 10 pupils from Hamble, Swanmore, Quilley, Wyvern, Crestwood and Thornden schools joined 1700 A Level students at Barton Peveril’s annual Higher Education Fair.

More than 60 universities and higher education providers from England, Scotland and Wales set up a ‘one stop shop’ for the day, offering advice and helping students research the myriad options available to them. The event is well-established and ranks among the largest of its kind in the country with exhibitors travelling from as far afield as Glasgow, Aberystwyth and Plymouth.

The younger visitors were encouraged to think about the subject choices they need to make and results they need to achieve in order to have the right qualifications for sixth form college and university. Students already at Barton Peveril focused their attention on specific courses and university…

Voice for asylum seekers

The stark reality of the plight faced by refugees and asylum seekers was brought home to A Level students at Barton Peveril when Shirley Firth and Hazel Still from the Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group (SWVG) visited the college.

Shirley is a founder member of SWVG, a group of volunteers who befriend and support asylum seekers and refugees, campaign for their rights and strive to get their voices heard in the local community.

Her impassioned discussions with staff and students exploded many of the myths surrounding the circumstances, status and detention of asylum seekers; people who have left their country of origin and formally applied for asylum in the UK.

As well as participating in an A Level Religious Studies class, Shirley and Helen were interviewed by Emma Leighton and fellow students from…

Kaleidoscopic talent

A total of 115 students studying AS and A2 level Textiles put their creations on the catwalk at the college’s annual fashion show in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

The 2011 extravaganza was a compilation of two showcases entitled Kaleidoscopic. Students were encouraged to explore the traditional and be experimental with more unorthodox materials to create innovative, quirky, one-off garments displaying an exciting mix of colour, texture, silhouette and form.

First year (AS) students drew on the abundance of colour, light and pattern found at fairgrounds, arcades, carnivals and festivals as their starting points for colour, texture and pattern, adding style references and ideas from historical costume, contemporary fashion and multicultural dress.

Second year (A2) students based their designs on a personal choice of theme. Ideas ranged from 1940s Hollywood Glamour to Domesticity…
