Huhne energises audience

More than 40 geography and environmental studies students heard former energy secretary and Eastleigh MP, Chris Huhne, tackle the issues surrounding renewable energy when Barton Peveril hosted the fifth Vitacress Conservation Trust annual lecture.

The students were among an audience of around 130 invited guests who heard Mr Huhne’s views on the vital role of renewables in recovering economies and made insightful contributions to a question and answer session.

The Vitacress Conservation Trust is a charity set up by Europe’s leading grower and packer of ready-to-eat salad leaves. It focuses on environmental initiatives associated with salad and watercress crop production.

Trust chairman, Professor Gail Taylor from Southampton University, said: “I am particularly delighted that so many students were in the audience for this year’s annual lecture.

“There are no easy answers to the renewables…

Voice for asylum seekers

The stark reality of the plight faced by refugees and asylum seekers was brought home to A Level students at Barton Peveril when Shirley Firth and Hazel Still from the Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group (SWVG) visited the college.

Shirley is a founder member of SWVG, a group of volunteers who befriend and support asylum seekers and refugees, campaign for their rights and strive to get their voices heard in the local community.

Her impassioned discussions with staff and students exploded many of the myths surrounding the circumstances, status and detention of asylum seekers; people who have left their country of origin and formally applied for asylum in the UK.

As well as participating in an A Level Religious Studies class, Shirley and Helen were interviewed by Emma Leighton and fellow students from…

Volunteering is a way of life

For second year student Chloe Hawkins, volunteering has become a way of life.  The 17-year-old former Woodlands pupil wants to work with people who have special educational needs and has volunteered at every level from early years through primary and secondary school to adults.

Chloe juggles her new placement with the Rose Road Association in Southampton with a hectic college timetable, weekly volunteering at Quilley School in Eastleigh, and dropping into the nearby Hexagon Centre for vulnerable adults on her days off.

“I can’t describe what volunteering gives me, it’s just that great feeling that comes from helping someone else,” says Chloe.

“It’s often the simplest things that make the most difference, like taking the time to sit and play a game.  Volunteering has just become something I do.”

Student appointed UK Global Poverty Ambassador

When Roxana Andrusca applied for a place to study at the London School of Economics (LSE), little did she expect to find herself being appointed a Global Poverty Ambassador with a personal invitation to meet Bill Gates during his recent visit to the university.

The Ambassador Project is designed to increase awareness of the reality of extreme poverty and show how local communities can play a part in ending it.

Within days of completing the rigorous interview and selection process, Roxana met the billionaire philanthropist face to face when he spoke to Global Poverty Ambassadors as part of the London launch of his Annual Letter.

Kaleidoscopic talent

A total of 115 students studying AS and A2 level Textiles put their creations on the catwalk at the college’s annual fashion show in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

The 2011 extravaganza was a compilation of two showcases entitled Kaleidoscopic. Students were encouraged to explore the traditional and be experimental with more unorthodox materials to create innovative, quirky, one-off garments displaying an exciting mix of colour, texture, silhouette and form.

First year (AS) students drew on the abundance of colour, light and pattern found at fairgrounds, arcades, carnivals and festivals as their starting points for colour, texture and pattern, adding style references and ideas from historical costume, contemporary fashion and multicultural dress.

Second year (A2) students based their designs on a personal choice of theme. Ideas ranged from 1940s Hollywood Glamour to Domesticity…
