Any student would be over the moon to be offered one of just 70 places on a degree course that 2,000 people applied for.
But if you’re a mature student who has gained the right qualifications for university in a single year, the sense of achievement is even greater.
That’s how Dawn Sutcliffe feels after being accepted on a Midwifery degree course at Bournemouth University’s Portsmouth campus following a one year Access to Higher Education course at Barton Peveril.
The 27-year-old from Hedge End is one of several success stories nurtured by the college’s Adult Learning team on a course which, she says, has definitely given her confidence and been good preparation for university life.

Trampolinist Calum McDonald has won the Mens’ Open B group of the Southampton Schools’ Championships, ending his local competitive career on a high note.
The competition was Calum’s last before concentrating on his A Level exams this summer. He hopes to study maths at Kingston University from September and continue his training at the Kingston Trampoline Academy.

Musicians turned up the volume with good reason when the college’s choir and jazz ensemble both received invitations to perform at the prestigious National Music for Youth Festival in Birmingham this summer.
The inspirational six day Festival showcases the best young talent from across the UK with participants selected from more than 50,000 performers at regional festivals held earlier in the year.
The 33 singers and 16 jazz musicians are hoping to repeat Barton Peveril’s success in 2009 when the jazz group won the overall Music for Youth award.

More than 40 geography and environmental studies students heard former energy secretary and Eastleigh MP, Chris Huhne, tackle the issues surrounding renewable energy when Barton Peveril hosted the fifth Vitacress Conservation Trust annual lecture.
The students were among an audience of around 130 invited guests who heard Mr Huhne’s views on the vital role of renewables in recovering economies and made insightful contributions to a question and answer session.
The Vitacress Conservation Trust is a charity set up by Europe’s leading grower and packer of ready-to-eat salad leaves. It focuses on environmental initiatives associated with salad and watercress crop production.
Trust chairman, Professor Gail Taylor from Southampton University, said: “I am particularly delighted that so many students were in the audience for this year’s annual lecture.

Scott Stroman, Head of the Jazz Programme at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, spent a day at Barton Peveril leading the College’s first Festival of Wind and Brass.
Talented Y10 and 11 instrumentalists from partner schools joined A Level musicians for a day of ensemble performance and composition workshops. The exciting opportunity to learn from one of the UK’s foremost music education experts concluded with a twilight performance for friends and family.

Standing on an ice cap atop an active volcano was an experience not to be forgotten for a group of Barton Peveril students recently returned from a trip to Iceland.
The first year A Level geographers heard and felt earthquakes, scaled dormant volcanoes, climbed contrasting rock formations and swam in a blue lagoon as part of their week in a unique living landscape.

Second year Textiles student Amy Carlin will have her work judged by internationally renowned designer Wayne Hemingway MBE after being selected to take part in a project that aims to raise the profile of emerging designers and the work of charitable organisations in Eastleigh.
Now in its second year, the Enliven project brings together artists, designers and local charities to ‘enliven’ Eastleigh town centre during the summer months in a competition primarily for practising fashion and textile designers.
Over the coming weeks Amy will be working with donations from local charity shops to create new, customised designer clothing and accessories. Her work will be exhibited as part of a fashion trail around Eastleigh town centre before being put on the catwalk and sold in aid of Save the Children.

Barton Peveril students bounced, attacked, volleyed, smashed, rallied, and flicked their way to regional and national success at the British Colleges National Championships held at Bath University.
Eleven students qualified to represent the South East region in the three day event which saw more than 2,000 students and staff from colleges across 11 UK regions competing in 14 different sports.
Up and coming national tennis talent Rob Mitchell from Southampton proved himself the best player across all British Colleges, taking gold with top form serves and magnificent prowess on court.
Trampolinist Calum McDonald contributed to the South East team achievement with a silver medal while the Men’s Volleyball team took silver to become the second highest ranking team in the country. The title went to Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

Challenging and relaxing at same time. That’s how Conor O’Neill describes Irish Dancing, a hobby that sees him practise for up to seven hours a week and compete on the national and international stage.
Conor started dancing after he accompanied a friend to a class at the age of eight. He has competed at the World Championships five times and came 11th in his category at the 2011 event. He hopes to qualify for the 2013 competition later this year.
“Irish Dancing is just something I do and I really, really enjoy it,” says Conor.
“I don’t know why I love it so much…I get out of breath, my legs ache but there’s just something about it!”
