Graphic Design at Barton Peveril lies firmly within the Art Department. The course will provide you with an immersive experience into many art disciplines centered around the need to respond to a design brief. All projects start with extensive research into existing products and the work of other designers before developing outcomes that creatively meet the needs of your chosen brief. It is a challenging course designed to lead on from the skills gained in GSCE Art or Graphics and prepare you for further studies in the creative industry.

You will build your expertise across multiple Art disciplines with a particular focus on photography, digital and traditional illustration, mixed media image creation, typography, layout and branding. We will encourage you to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Wacom Tablets to develop your work, alongside enabling you to develop more traditional Art based skills such as printmaking, paper and stencil cutting and collage.

We aim to extend your creative intellect as well as practical skills and will be pushing you to take risks and be experimental with your design concepts. You will learn about the academic discipline of design and explore how colour, composition, line, tone, symbolism and branding can be employed to create successful Graphic Design.

Assessment is based on your practical portfolio so enthusiasm, organisation and self-discipline will be important attributes to maintain throughout the year. Commitment outside of lessons is crucial to success and you will be expected to complete at least three to five hours of independent study every week to meet the demands of the course.
