Applying to top universities

As a student at Barton Peveril your progress towards career and university choices forms a central part of your tutorial programme, whatever your ambitions and whichever subjects and higher education routes are right for you.

If your GCSE grades suggest that you should be aiming high in your choice of course and university then you will be identified as a potential applicant for Oxford, Cambridge or others in the Russell Group of leading academic and research universities in the UK. You will be contacted during your first few weeks at college and invited to join a specialist support programme run by our Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator.

A series of meetings and seminars will demystify the application process, help you get the most from attendance at open day events and provide valuable tips from university admissions officers and other guest speakers.

Oxbridge success

For those with Oxbridge in their sights, there is additional guidance available together with mock interviews. Barton Peveril has an excellent Oxbridge success rate with one in four applicants being offered a place compared with the national average of one in five.

Five star outcome

An exam board mix up resulted in a five star outcome for Ashley Mould.

As one of Barton Peveril’s most gifted students, the former Mountbatten pupil was predicted to get A* grades in Maths, Economics, History and Sociology together with the Extended Project. So when his results slip showed a C for History the college made swift investigations.

With four other A* grades already in the bag, Ashley’s place to read Economics at Cambridge was secure. But when exam board OCR apologised for an administrative error which saw him awarded just eight marks for a History paper when he had actually scored the maximum 120, the outcome was greeted with delight all round!
